What Happened<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

About ten minutes into the second half, Kon\u00e9 was caught by a hard tackle from Qatar’s Assim Madibo. He grabbed his leg in pain right away, and Canada’s medical staff rushed onto the pitch within seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada coach Jesse Marsch later confirmed just how bad it was. “I could hear the bone snap,” he said in the post-match press conference. Kon\u00e9 had broken his left leg \u2014 and surgery would follow that same night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madibo, the player responsible for the tackle, was shown a red card after VAR review \u2014 Qatar’s second of the match, leaving them to finish with nine men. By all accounts, Madibo was deeply affected by what happened. He personally apologized to Kon\u00e9 after the match, and Canada’s coach later said he didn’t believe the tackle was intentional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The player apologized to Isma\u00ebl, like came into the dressing room and apologized to him,” Marsch said. “I don’t think that he meant such a gruesome tackle.” What did frustrate Marsch was the reaction from Qatar’s bench afterward \u2014 a heated exchange broke out at full time, which he called “strange behavior” given the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was a quiet moment of tribute too. Nathan Saliba, who came on to replace Kon\u00e9, scored Canada’s fourth goal of the match minutes later \u2014 and ran to the sideline holding up Kon\u00e9’s jersey in celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What This Means for Canada<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Losing Kon\u00e9 is a real blow. He’s been a consistent presence in Canada’s midfield, and his coach didn’t hide how much it hurts. “He’ll be a huge loss,” Marsch admitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada now heads into their final group match against Switzerland \u2014 a match that will decide who tops Group B \u2014 without one of their key midfielders. How they adjust will be worth watching, both for the rest of the group stage and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
