How It Happened<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Canada took the field with Maxime Cr\u00e9peau in goal; Alistair Johnston, Luc de Fougerolles, Derek Cornelius, and Richie Laryea formed the back four; Tajon Buchanan, Stephen Eust\u00e1quio, Isma\u00ebl Kon\u00e9 and Ali Ahmed started in midfield; David and Larin led the team in attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It took little time for Canada to get on the board, with Cyle Larin finding the back of the net in the 16th minute off a rebound shot. Qatar’s afternoon went from bad to worse. Qatar’s foul woes truly started in the 33rd minute, when Homam Ahmed was given a straight red card after denying Tajon Buchanan a goal just outside the box. Down to ten men, the floodgates opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The home side then rounded out the win through an own goal from Qatar midfielder Mohamed Manai in the 75th minute, and David finding the back of the net from inside the box for his third goal of the match in the second minute of added time. Wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the final whistle, Qatar were down to nine men and Canada had their long-awaited first World Cup win \u2014 in the biggest possible way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This wasn’t just any win. It was not only Canada’s first victory at a World Cup but also equaled the record margin of victory for a tournament host, matching the six-goal wins for Italy in 1934, Brazil in 1950 and Argentina in 1978.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada’s tally against Qatar also doubled the number of goals they had in their World Cup history coming into the game. Encyclopedia Britannica<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The home crowd felt every bit of it. More than 52,000 fans at a sold-out BC Place, almost all in Canadian red, saluted the team with a standing ovation at halftime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No one will forget this, and no Canadian will forget this day,” said coach Jesse Marsch, who held up six fingers as he walked off the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What This Means for Canada’s World Cup Hopes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The win means Canada keeps pace with Group B favourite Switzerland, which rolled over Bosnia-Herzegovina, 4-1, earlier on Thursday in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada now sits first in Group B and needs a draw or a win against Switzerland to win the group and secure a spot in the Round of 32. Fox News<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada’s big showdown with the Swiss, which will determine the winner of Group B, happens next Wednesday, June 24, in Vancouver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That match is now one of the biggest of the group stage \u2014 a co-host with momentum against the team that’s looked sharpest in Group B so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s be honest \u2014 Qatar were down to nine men for most of the second half, which inflated the scoreline. This wasn’t a true test of Canada’s quality against full-strength opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the underlying performance was still impressive. Canada were clinical, organised, and capitalised on every advantage they were given. Jonathan David looked sharp after a quiet run of form. The home crowd advantage at BC Place is real \u2014 that kind of energy lifts a team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
